Additions to the Murabitid silver catalogue
Miguel Vega and Salvador PeņaThe corpus of medieval Western Islamic coins is, of course, a work in progress. The possibility of finding unrecorded pieces is always open. This is particularly true for Murabitid (or Almoravid) silver coins. Murabitid Emirs, especially 'Ali ibn Yusuf (AH 500-537/AD 1106-1143), issued an unusual variety of small to tiny qirats and fractions of qirats bearing different decorations and inscriptions. The coins we present here are unrecorded as far as we know.
1. Qirat; struck by Yusuf ibn Tashfin and his heir 'Ali ibn Yusuf (AH 496-500/AD 1103-1106); mintless, undated; diameter: 10,06 mm., weight: 0,62 grs. Obverse : Al-Amir Yusuf / ibn Tashfin wa-al-a/mir 'Ali ('Emir Yusuf / ibn Tashfin and E/mir 'Ali'); reverse: La ilah illa Allah / Muhammad Rasul Allah ('There is no god but God / Muhammad is the Messenger of God').
2. Half qirat; struck by 'Ali ibn Yusuf (AH 500-537/AD 1106-1143); mintless, undated; diameter: 9,5 mm., weight: 0,35 grs. Obverse: Wali / Allah / 'Ali ('The Friend / of God / [is] 'Ali'); reverse: anepigraphic.
3. Eighth qirat; anonymous ; mintless, undated; diameter: 7,2 mm., weight: 0,085 grs. Obverse: Li-[A]llah / Wali ('God has / a Friend [?]'); reverse: Li-[A]llah / Wali ('God has / a Friend [?]').
